Maternal Health Equity with Dr. Jallicia Jolly (Philly RJ WOA)

Curious to learn more about maternal health equity in the US? Join Penn Reproductive Justice on the Street (RJOS) for our speaker event on Fri 10/9 at 5-7 PM on the 1st floor auditorium of the Perelman Center for Political Science & Economics (133 S 36th St).

We will feature Dr. Jallicia Jolly, an expert in reproductive justice scholarship who blends interdisciplinary health humanities and Black feminist thought. As an Assistant Professor of American Studies and Black Studies at Amherst College, she translates community-based research on Black women's health into political action through serving as Co-Chair of Birth Equity and Justice Massachusetts (BEJMA) and the founder and director of the Black Feminist Reproductive Justice, Equity, and HIV/AIDS Activism (BREHA) Collective. Dr. Jolly's first book manuscript, Ill Erotics: Black Jamaica Women and Self-Making in the Time of HIV/AIDS will be published in November and is an ethnography of the reproductive justice organizing of young Black Jamaican women living and loving with HIV that chronicles their everyday confrontations with illness, reproductive violence, and inequality in neocolonial Jamaica.

Light snacks and refreshments will be served, and there will be an opportunity for audience Q&A. There will be a virtual option available as well.

This event is co-sponsored by Collective Power, Penn GSWS/FQT, and Penn's Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy. It is part of the Philadelphia Reproductive Justice Week of Action (RJ WOA), an initiative from Oct 8-17 spanning reproductive justice topics from menstrual equity and abortion rights to maternal health equity. RJ WOA is organized by Penn Reproductive Justice and RJOS and is sponsored by national and local organizations, including Reproductive Freedom for All, SisterSong, and Planned Parenthood Southeastern PA.
